STRAIGHT BUT NOT NARROW

I get impatient when I hear people bringing up the "sanctity of marriage" whenever gay rights is discussed (discussed is a much more polite term for some of the yelling and screaming which is actually what can occur. isn't it?).

Does a gay couple having the right to be wed somehow affect the 50% divorce rate of regular hetrosexual marriages?

With the great majority of people having sex before and outside of marriage, who is keeping track of how many of them just might be of the same sex?

I believe in marriage -- and the old-fashioned no-sex outside of marriage, till-death-do-us-part deal -- and I even believe in the one man, one woman bit.
But allowing a homosexual couple to be legally bound, to have the same spousal rights as I have, doesn't threaten my marriage.

If the sanctity of marriage is your beef, then please, before you jump on gays trying to get married, work on troubled marriages - consider spousal abuse - address abused children.  Worry about the couples who get hitched for 48 hours and then get divorced. Talk about people who are married 3, 4, 7 times.

While my definition of sleeping together generally means the cat and two dogs are on my bed, I can accept that with most of American society, that means having sex. And going steady means having sex. Heck, even dating means having sex.

Can anyone consider that THIS is affecting marriage, or what we define as marriage, so much more than gay marriage?

This is more than a little bit babbling, but I hope you are seeing my point.

NOW IT'S A PLAN

Take up tiny seconds.

Bind them together with small spits of energy.

Continue to scour for those lost time segments.

Keep stirring them with action.

Gradually, oh so gradually,

Slowly enough that no one notices,

Add more and more of those instants of reality,

Detracting only from mindless pursuits of the Internet

And gagging on commercially processed foods.

At least that's the beginning of the plan.

Let's see what happens.

LIBERAL RANTING AND RAVING

I didn't used to consider myself a liberal.

Partially because of the sheer pride in which my husband has always declared himself a liberal Democrat - it always rubs me a bit the wrong way, it seems to be him bending over backwards to not be his Republican father.

And the term "liberal" always seems to be, excuse me, too ACTIVE a term for someone as politically lazy as I have been.

So what is now driving me to apply this term to myself?

The conservatives.

GUN CONTROL immediately becomes TAKING AWAY ALL OF OUR SELF-DEFENSE.

GAY MARRIAGE THREATENING AMERICAN FAMILY.

BIRTH CONTROL = WILD GROUP ORGY SEX

(well, maybe this one is exaggerated a bit).

I'm not saying they are the only ones who use hyperboles such as this; the liberals can use the same ammunition.

It just seems to be the ONLY way they will "discuss" controversial subjects.

The one that triggered this blog today is in response to the tragedy in Connecticut.

IF GOD WERE ONLY ALLOWED IN SCHOOLS...

This really gets my blood pressure up.

Sure, this sounds all cozy-sweet-Jesus-loving-cotton-candy-sweet.

But, if, as they say, PRAYERS WERE ALLOWED IN SCHOOLS...

Then WHAT prayers?

Catholic rosary? Christian? The five obligatory Muslim prayers?
Prayer over lunch? Prayer over snacks? Prayer to visit the restroom in safety?

Who decides when? What kind? And who leads it?
What if someone wants silent prayer, and another wants to sing it?

And what about the child who does NOT want to pray? Should they be forced to? Or banished because they don't?

Freedom of religion means that YOU don't get to decide what MY form of worship will be. That I do not have to worship as you do, and in particular my CHILD does not have to worship like your child does.

And this one kinda says it all for me:

Okay, Hope, now take a deep breath and move on to more important things - like loving all these people making all these bumper-sticker slogans regardless of their political views.

MARRIWAGE...THAT DWEAM WIFIN A DWEAM

Someone, actually a very nice young woman I know quite well, posted this on Facebook this morning:

Marriage is between one woman and one man. That's bibical. Anything else is something, but it's not marriage. If you believe this, LIKE and SHARE.  What do you think? Share your thoughts with us.

I know that anything I write/post/scream will not change hers or anyone else's point - I'm so tired of all the election-shouting that has been going on - but here in my own little personal blog, I can blow off some steam.

And I NEED to.

"Marriage is between one woman and one man. That's Biblical."

Hmm. Biblical.

Well, so is polygamy. (Genesis 4:23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; yewives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.)

If a man marries a divorced woman, he is guilty of adultery. (Matthew 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery)

There is also allowing your daughters to be raped ( Genesis 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them asis good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.)

And get your daughters pregnant ( Genesis 19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.)

You get my point.

Add caption
The Bible is a collection of records - some very spiritual and enlightening - some simply the records of what people do - and it ain't all pretty.

And I have no problem with using a particular reference or scripture to prove a point.

But then don't try to hide behind the term "Biblical."

And this "ad" is obviously pointed towards the heretics who support same-sex marriage.

Yes, I agree, same-sex marriage is not ideal - it may even be sinful.

But if we are going after "sinful" stuff, let us as a society PLEASE tackle the much more prevalent problems of martial  infidelity - cheating on your spouse - spousal abuse - child abuse - sexual abuse - sexual abuse of a child - WAY before we try to stop two people who care enough about each other to want to be married, share property, insurance and benefits.

DEFYING GRAVITY

Balance is difficult for some. Me? I am so unsymmetrical that I am amazed every time I make it across a room without falling over. Both my right arm and leg are significantly longer than my left - my eyes are misaligned enough that simple reading glasses need to be worn askance to be effective -- I can't chew bubble gum and walk at the same time.

So I forced constantly to adjust my stance, my momentum, my overall action and energies to not fall flat on the floor (although that literally do happen occasionally).

But I don't deliberately alternate my social and/or political beliefs to align and/or calculatingly clash (as some people do - the deliberate clash, I mean).

So I find myself somehow hanging somewhere around the middle of everything - and so infuriating EVERYONE ELSE.

I'm not the Republican conservative that most Mormons are - but I'm not the liberal Democrat that my husband wishes to be.

I support traditional family relationships -- but also am fully in favor of gays being allowed to marry.

I think abortion is the termination of a human life -- but don't think abortion should be illegal.

I agree that the government shouldn't be responsible for solving every one's problems -- but I have a disabled adult child who could  not live interdependently without food stamps and her state low-income health insurance.

I KNOW that the people who earn more money should be taxed more.

So I'm somewhere in the middle of all of this -and continue to make BOTH sides furious at me.

THUNDER & LIGHTENING VS RAINBOWS

There are quite a few nasty things in our little world that occur fairly regularly.

Spouses are abused, belittled, and cheated on.

Children are beat up, starved, locked up, sold, and deserted.

People cheat, steal, lie and hurt each other deliberately.

Sexual predators prey on the young, the poor, the defenseless.

Money is stolen from the elderly, virtue is taken from the young, addictions are carefully sown to provide fortunes to the suppliers.

So instead of getting all worked up about individuals who love and support each other and who want to be married legally, and publicly vow to be bound to each other for the rest of their mortal lives...

Could you please channel some of that energy exploding out against gay marriage to solve the real crimes against humanity.
