LEAVING ON A JET PLANE (PART 493)

I both dread and delight in going to visit my grandkids and my daughter in California.

I always have a lot of fun playing with Kate and Colin and just being silly with Harmony.

But I leave so much... OPEN stuff here at home.

Things that will probably never get CLOSED before the end of my  mortal existence, but still nag away at me when I am someplace else.

Although I can quite conveniently ignore when I am actually home.

Things like my photo albums (which were once completely organized and then taken apart by my mom in her Alzheimer's years) -- cleaning (which is never ever going to be enough of a priority with me to take very seriously) -- writing (things besides this silly blog - this I can keep up long distance) -- taking time to work more with my horse.

Things that take the time that I never seem to have while at home, and yet have in huge globs while on vacation.

Okay, Hope, take a deep breath.

Get packed.

And enjoy the time in California.

HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED RIDES AGAIN

I am adopting a horse named Sweet Lady Gray.

She is, as you might guess from her name, a gray horse, but what they call a flea-bitten gray - not the dramatic dapples, nor the almost albino grays - but patterned over with what do actually look like flea bites of darker hairs.

She has a bit of a romantic history - she was discovered abandoned, starving, right here on the Mexican border, probably being used to transport drugs and then dumped when they got over to the U.S. Someone found her, literally took several hours to walk her to the nearest road one mile away, and then brought her home to fatten up and keep happy for the next ten years.

Her owner then had a major heart attack, and had to put her up for adoption.

Her nickname is Sweets - but I may have to change that now.

She got into a tussle with some other horses last week, and got some scrapes.

And on her muzzle now is a lovely lightening-shaped skinned area.

Harry Potter, anyone?

BIBLICALLY ACCURATE

Someone put this on Pinterest today, I am assuming in all seriousness.

Really?

Let's go back to public stonings - gosh, we better sell our daughters when necessary - polygamy is okay then...

Have these "Christians" actually ever READ the Bible?

"BREATHING? BREATHING IS BORING."

It seems to hit around 2 or 3 a.m. every morning.

My body gets tired of breathing.

I wake up with almost a grasp, like someone has suddenly turned off my oxygen.

And I end up spending a  couple of hours playing on the Internet, willing my body to relax and get ready to sleep without stopping my breath.

Yes, I'll lie back down, concentrate on taking slow, deep breaths, both to relax and convince my lungs that they need to work.

And continue to deal with the sensation of simply not getting enough air.

It's a very frustrating situation.

I'm trying to turn into "quality" computer time - I'm seeing if I can be brave enough to actually try housework (and the possibility of waking my husband in his bedroom at the far end of the house).

But I really just want to go back to sleep.

And breathe.

UNEXPECTED TEARS

Following professional advice, I got myself off of one anti-depressant medication.

Side effects?

Crying.

A lot.

Unexpectedly.

Part of me this thinks this is a spiritual awakening.

The bigger thought inside is that I've simply had my eyes open for too long without the tears to soften them.

Doctor, my eyes have seen the years
And the slow parade of fears without crying
Now I want to understand
I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hiding
You must help me if you can

Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what is wrong
Was I unwise to leave them open for so long

'Cause I have wandered through this world
And as each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams
People go just where there will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems

Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what you see
I hear their cries
Just say if it's too late for me

Doctor, my eyes
Cannot see the sky
Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry

WIND AND DUST AND MOODS

There are different names for various types of desert winds.

I grew up with the Santa Ana winds in Southern California.

El Nino was recognized as a serious influence in world climate predictions.

And I love the photographs of the haboobs drowning the Phoenix area.

Right now we are just being plummeted with good old fashioned warm wind. And dust.

And I am trying very hard not to blame it for my overall grumpy mood.

It's not hot enough that I can blame the heat - it's barely in the 80's today

And it's not the blasting of cold wind that we get in the winter that cuts through you.

It's just dusty... and constant... and loud.

QUID PRO QUO

Directly from WikipediaQuid pro quo ("something for something" in Latin) means an exchange of goods or services, where one transfer is contingent upon the other. English speakers often use the term to mean "a favour for a favour"; phrases with similar meaning include: "give and take", "tit for tat", and "you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours."

I'm trying to move beyond this.

One of the best definitions I have ever heard of pure love is doing something for someone when there is absolutely chance that they can ever repay you.

I'm not even close to that.

I especially have difficulty with one family member - and it may be particularly because he IS a family member that I expect more.

And I don't think I'm demanding a lot - I simply am asking for some social niceties - like a simple "thank you," perhaps even an occasional "please."

And am simply not getting a lot of them.

However, I am morally obligated by my OWN standards to NOT expect such behavior, or allow such behavior (or lack-thereof) to change what I believe is the correct thing(s) to do.

So suck it up, Hope, and do the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do.

ADMIRATION

My friend Annette is helping me set things in order once again.

She and a friend are undergoing chemotherapy, and in anticipation of losing their hair, they have both shaved their heads in advance.

I am both applauding their solidarity in sharing their problems and humbled by the sheer magnitude of what they are facing.

A PERFECTLY ORDINARY SUNDAY

Twice a year, my church has what it calls "General Conference."

We have a variety of speakers from our leadership, and it's broadcast from Salt Lake City.

Although some hard-core members seem to think spiritual brownie points are earned if you get dressed up and go actually watch the sessions at our local meetinghouse, I firmly hold to the ideal of watching it on BYU-TV in my pajamas.

But I do try to actual watch the sessions live.

It's a total of eight hours over the weekend.

And I always learn some really wonderful stuff.

RUNNING A RED LIGHT.... HOW THE CONSTITUTION GETS IN THERE

A friend forwarded me a request -

To "like" the facebook page, banredlightcamerasinsierravista

I don't know about you - maybe you are one of those people who run red lights, don't use your turn signal, and are normally driving about ten miles above the speed limit.

But I'm not - I am one of those incredibly annoying people who, when the speed limit is 35 mph, is actually DRIVING 35 mph.

I admit to never coming to a full and complete at a stop sign - the expression "California stop" was invented for just me.

But I have never intentionally run a red light, I do not knowingly exceed the speed limit, and I ALWAYS use my turn signal, even if there in not a single car in sight/

So, obviously, I am FULLY in favor of the speed cams that catch you at the traffic intersections.

This Facebook page had some fun arguments against the speed cams: now I am going to list ALL their arguments, not just the ones they listed:

(Don't read this unless you are really interested - I just find it incredibly silly)

1. Burden on the innocent: Misidentification
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the registered owner is the driver only 72% of the time. Without consideration for any other shortcomings, over 1 in 4 tickets are issued to the wrong person!

HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE DO YOU ALLOW TO DRIVE YOUR CAR?!

3. Even when you win, you lose!
Every time a driver receives a citation from a traffic camera, they are faced with the decision to take time off work to fight the ticket, or to just pay the fine. So either way, the driver loses.

YOU DON’T LOSE – YOU JUST OBEY THE LAW NEXT TIME.

7. Uses our money to feed out of state Corporations

The two camera vendors that operate in Washington, Redflex (from Australia) and American Traffic Solutions (from Arizona), receive an average of 50% of the money that is generated by the cameras.

ARGH! ARIZONA IS GETTING SOME MONEY FROM WASHINGTON STATE!

4. Leaves Motorists Defenseless
Motorists who receive photo tickets are at a severe disadvantage to make a defense due to the weeks or months that may lapse before a driver is served with a citation. Weeks or months after a “violation,” a driver is unlikely to be able to recall the details of the“violation.” Furthermore, drivers are unable to collect evidence to defend themselves because it is unlikely that signs and road conditions are the same as they were when the alleged violation occurred.

COLLECT EVIDENCE? SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU HAD A REASON TO RUN THAT RED LIGHT?

5. Less Safe
Multiple studies show an INCREASE of accidents with red light and speed cameras.
Driving conditions on roads and freeways are made more dangerous by interrupting the free flow of traffic as people respond to the presence of cameras. The same goes at red light camera intersections where drivers slam on their brakes to avoid tickets.

OH, YEAH – NOW YOU ARE PENALIZING TAILGATERS. DON’T WANNA DO THAT.

6. Lack of Audit and Oversight
There is no stated maintenance or audit program by any government authority of the private camera vendors and their equipment and processes to ensure reliability and accuracy.

OKAY, THAN MAYBE GET SOME WORKING MAINTENANCE GOING.

8. Solutions to problems that don’t exist
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, there“hasn’t been a serious pedestrian-vehicle accident in a school zone in Lakewood’s 13-year history.” Yet, Lakewood has speed cameras in school zones to keep children safe? Sounds like the kids were already safe.

GOSH, THEN, WE BETTER WAIT UNTIL THERE IS A ‘SERIOUS” INCIDENT – WHY BOTHER TO KEEP A HOMICIDE FROM HAPPENING?

9. Conflict of Interest
* Traffic cameras provide lawmakers with a personal financial incentive to protect controversial traffic camera programs.
* Camera vendors provide court administration modules for judges, attorneys, and witnesses that present and assess common dispute tactics and appropriate sound counter- measures required for successful prosecution.
* Camera vendors develop the violation criteria that the cities use to determine what constitutes a violation.

YEAH, THE REAL REASON FOR ALL OF THIS IS TO MAKE EXTRA MONEY, EH?

10. Denial of Due Process
The Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause gives the accused the right to be confronted by witnesses against them. With cameras, the driver is never confronted by a police officer ticketing him. The accused are not being provided with the opportunity to cross-examine or subpoena all camera equipment operators along with anyone who handled the evidence or the officer who issued the citation. Nor are they being provided with the opportunity to examine the design and operation of the equipment itself.

FOR CRIPES SAKE... THIS IS FOR A TRAFFIC VIOLATION!

11. Photo Enforcement Vendors Are Not Trustworthy
*
Arizona Secretary of State, Jan Brewer, confirmed that Redflex documents used in court to convict motorists of speeding in Lafayette, Louisiana had been falsified.
*
Many cities have all been caught shortening yellow lights to increase profits from red light cameras.
* In Italy, a speed camera company was caught in a fraud scandal that involved 109 officials and contractors.
* In January 2009, the makers of the T-Red brand of red light cameras were similarly arrested for fraud after prosecutors found motorists were being trapped at intersections with short yellows and improperly certified equipment
* Redflex violated federal law by using radar units that were not FCC certified.
* Redflex employees have been charged with assault, child pornography, and extreme DUI (while driving a photo radar van). They can observe your car, wife, and children and they can figure out where you live. They have access to your DMV records.

I'M SORRY - THIS IS JUST GETTING SILLY (and Jan Brewer is our Governor now - you're dating your  information).

12. Invasion of Privacy
The cameras are high-resolution video devices that run 24 hours a day. According to officer King with Arizona DPS, “We can just about zoom in and see stuff on the dash.”

AND YOU CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO SEE WHAT'S ON MY DASHBOARD... WHICH IS IN PLAIN VIEW.

13. Affects Consumer Spending and Tourism
Nationwide, cities have responded to threats from locals and out of towners who have vowed to stop shopping in areas with photo enforcement by removing equipment.

GOSH, I'M GOING TO STOP SHOPPING IN AREAS THAT DON'T ENCOURAGE ME TO BREAK THE LAW.

14. Criminal Activity Has Become a Civil Matter, Not a Crime
Local governments have skirted constitutional protections by classifying speed camera tickets as civil, not criminal violations. Efforts to challenge the tickets based on constitutional grounds that appear to have a chance at succeeding are simply dismissed in favor of the driver, swept under the rug by local governments before they can be fully adjudicated.

YEAH, BECAUSE TRAFFIC TICKETS SHOULD BE CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTED.

15. Lucrative Photo Enforcement Favored Over Engineering
Cities rarely conduct engineering studies to determine why a particular intersection experiences more accidents. Officials incorrectly assume that bad drivers flock to these intersections and that their behavior can be cured with the threat of tickets received weeks after the infraction. In reality, the same drivers are present in all intersections, and if a particular intersection has a high accident rate the reason is undoubtedly due to flaws or problems that can be corrected with proper traffic engineering. Such measures may include: adding signs, making signs clearer, more visible signs, changing road striping and indicators, adjusting light timing, and increasing signals more visibility. Until an engineering study is done, it is impossible to understand the underlying factors and thus impossible to objectively evaluate possible solutions.

EH?!

16. Doesn’t remove any immediate threat to citizens like drunks, reckless drivers, or speeders.

NO, IT ALSO DOESN'T SOLVE PORNOGRAPHY OR BANK ROBBERIES - SO WE BETTER NOT TRY IT, RIGHT?

17. Creates distrust and animosity for local officials, law enforcement departments, and makes a mockery of our judicial system.

YEAH,.... RIGHT

WIND WIND WIND

Did you know that the highest recorded wind was 253 mph., at Barrow Island in Australia?

And the world's record for heat was actually set at Death Valley, California at 134 degree?  (and I always figured the hottest places would be in the tropics)

The wind right now here is probably 30-40 mph - it's tough to stand up in, the dirt it is kicking up stings my face, but it's nothing hurricane strength.

So why am I complaining about it?

Because of the NOISE.

My poor little old dog cannot distinguish between the sound of the wind and oh let's say a  burglar trying to break down my front door.

So she is reacting to both with the same intense (albeit pretend) ferocity of barking and racing around, awaiting (her completely imaginary) illegal entry of our abode.

I just want some quiet.

CLEANING

I am far from an ideal housekeeper.

Most people have junk drawers - I have junk rooms.

I have more hiding places in closets, under beds, inside cabinets and on top of bookcases than you can possibly imagine.

So tonight my book club is coming over for it's monthly meeting.

Time for candlelight - not for the mood, but to hide most of the dust.
