HAVING THE LAST WORD

There's an expression - "So I let him have the last word."

"She'll never let me have the last word."

And what I take the expression to mean is that the "last word" means the last attempt to convince the other people of your argument or point.

Wikipedia even says, "Getting the last word means that you win the debate. It also shows your moral superiority. This should convince your opponent that you are correct, and will certainly impress your fellow Wikipedians."

However, there is SOMEONE (who will remain nameless) who MAINTAINS that the expression means LITERALLY the person who SAYS ALOUD THE VERY LAST WORD IN A CONVERSATION!!!

Do you know how difficult it is to NOT say "okay," or "sure" when it is taken as "trying to get the last word in"?!?!
